IS YOUR DIET DRINK MAKING YOU FAT?
So you’ve made a decision to lose weight and you begin a new diet.
Everything you eat is low-fat. Everything you drink is ‘diet’, diet coke, diet lemonade, etc.
But there lies the problem.
Just because a drink doesn’t contain sugar, doesn’t mean its good for your diet.
You see, diet drinks are a myth.
They don’t actually help you lose weight. On the contrary, they could actually make you gain weight.
You may think and may have been told that its the ideal way to consume soft drink and cut calories.
But research suggests that diet soft drink varieties could actually hamper your attempts to lose weight.
How? Enter the food additive ‘Aspartame’ or E951.
You may have heard the name, but you may not be aware of its effects.
It is the leading sweetener used in America and Europe.
A couple of numbers for you.
Aspartame is approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar. But get this. About 3500 tons of it are used every year in Europe alone.
So how does aspartame make you gain weight?
Its like this. Because sweeteners don’t contain calories, these sweeteners such as aspartame or even saccharin, confuse the body into thinking its about to get some.
When the sweet taste is picked up by the brain, it believes its about to receive calories, which in this case is not delivered.
So what happens?
The brain signals an energy emergency because it hasn’t received its expected sugar.
This energy emergency then orders the body to eat more to compensate for the loss of energy it should have received from the sweetener.
This in turn generates cravings, even though you may not be hungry, and can therefore actually make you eat more and gain weight.
By the way, its not just diet drinks that contain aspartame.
Often it is added to many everyday foods such as cream cakes, canned fish, fruit, desserts, biscuits, snacks, as well as sugar free drinks.
Here’s what to look out for when you check the ingredients.
E951, aspartame, acesulfame salt, or contains phenylalanine.
So the next time you go for a diet or sugar free drink, just remember, zero sugar does not always equal zero calories.
